APEIRON Among The Lost (CD)

08/28/2010 | I don’t get many chances to review a full-on metal record since the zine covers mostly hardcore-punk in its thousands shades and variations (sometimes happened that some HC bands were more “true metal” than a band labelling itself this way…) but I am really happy to be reviewing the debut full-length from this melodic death metal combo hailing from Vigevano, North Italy. APEIRON started out around 2001 and over the years faced its fair share of line-up changes, recorded a demo in 2002 titled “Endeternity”, which was followed-up by a well receipt EP “The Cruel Crime” dated 2008. 2009 sees the guys recording their debut full-length, released through Last Sream records (a label I well remember releasing some solid bands over the 90's) which shows a band that have matured both in terms of song-writing and alchemy between each member to become a force to be reckoned with.
“AMONG THE LOST” delivers, through 10 tracks, a rather personal, at times with a progressive edge, take on certain melodic death metal coming from the harsh, freezing landscapes of Scandinavia.
In terms of immediate comparisons, I’m reminded somewhat of the likes of Dark Tranquillity (the voice of Filippo Dendena reminds me much of Stanne), early In Flames, At The Gates, and to a certain extent, the more jazzy patterns and mind boggling progressions (check the lengthy “The Last Page”) of Pestilence Spheres era. Traces of influence from Carcass can be found, too (especially from the second track “Voids of breath” -really a killer tune that sticks to your mind since listen one!); however, after a few listens, anyone can see that APEIRON have an identity all their own, putting in the mix some other non-metallic influences as well.
An aspect I really like about this album are the bass parts: they’re complex and infuse the music with an added element of variation.
“Red Waters Of Acheron” is another track that stands out thanks to some atmospheric/symphonic parts, signature Swedish intertwining guitars, double bass drumming alternated to solid mid-tempos.
To put it simply “AMONG THE LOST” is a solid debut album through and through resulting in their most mature and devastating material thus far.
If I had to buy one metal record a year I would definitely not miss to grab a copy of “AMONG THE LOST”.
