GUNS ON THE RUN The Spirit Is Eternal (CD)
06/17/2010 | With an artwork picturing a rearing white horse struck by some lightening and back-cover with an epic angels slaughtering devils ink. and a quote “Freedom is a light for which many men died in darkness”, and a band name like GUNS ON THE RUN, I really didn’t know much what to expect from this record. Ok, the inlay picture of four skinhead blokes could have been of some help and the press-sheet info as well. Anyway, “THE SPIRIT IS ETERNAL” is, South Philly homed fourpiece, 4th full-length and debut release on Warbird Entertainment.By the number street oi punk and roll with 70’s influences, bits of Maiden-esque entwining guitars (listen to track number 6 “Burning Betrayal” and the closing “Sword of Storm Blood Of Demons -which reminds me also Anti-Flag) and AC/DC or Rose Tattoo boogie stomps (listen to opening riff of the eighth track titled “Her Blood Means War”), do you think that’s enough for your plate? Well, add some rockish guitar solos that kicks in the track aptly titled “Rock ‘n roll rebel” (btw: one of my favourites).
Perhaps the final result lacks of the grittiness and raw delivery of the likes of Agnostic Front, Rancid, Cock Sparrer and peers, but definitely doesn’t lack of working class passion and true sincerity.
A powerful call to the youths who believe that changing this dying world is still possible. In the liner notes Tommy states “The Spirit Is Eternal” and this can’t help me but remind of Italian hardcorers Negazione’s Lo Spirito Continua (The Spirit Lives On) attitude.
