WRENCH IN THE WORKS Decrease/Increase (CD)

06/04/2010 | This is the second record I got the chance to review from this foursome hailing from Hartford, Connecticut, and it follows up with their debut on Facedown records dated 2008 and titled “Lost Art Of Heaping Coal”.
I wouldn’t imagine the guys were able to bring their, at times, awkward musical proposal up to a further notch in terms of variety and challenging progressions (I’m sure the adding of a second guitar player brought much to the plate).
Yet I have the feeling that the “immediacy” of debut made the listen of their tunes more easy.
The new 11 tracks included in “DECREASE/INCREASE” need more than the usual couple of listens to start getting what’s going on with this record, but I’m sure that those into unconventional and chaotic time signatures of modern metal-influenced-hardcore will have a broad grin while cranking this record up.
My stand out tracks are “Gethsemane”, “Vows (I must decrease)” and “A Desert Voice”.
Bottom line: I loved more their debut but I find “DECREASE/INCREASE” a solid record that I definitely suggest to check out to all fans of Meshuggah, Converge and Zao.
